The original plans were for us to meet our friends from Botswana in Cape Town and they, being very familiar with the area, would do all the driving. However, their plans were unexpectedly changed and we found ourselves in an apt. in Bloubergstrand, a lovely seaside village outside of CT with no transportation. Our host kindly had a rental car delivered to us so that we could begin the driving adventure in an area with less traffic. For our first attempt we went inland to a town called Darling. I did all the navigating and spotting for round-abouts and traffic on the left and Bill drove with as little snarling as possible. It was an exercise in terror but we made it to Darling and back with the object of resting up for a day and trying again. Pictured is "Ole Blue" our rental safely parked in front of our apt.

I LOVE that you are doing a blog - what a great idea and obvious natural progression of your travellogues! The photos are a fantastic compliment to the narrative; now I can imagine you in Ole Blue!
ReplyDeleteHaving been the driver in an unfamiliar car and country (for me it was stick shift in Croatia with passengers Dali and Ineza), I can sympathize with Dad. Dali made only one comment ever - she said "are we going to hit every manhole cover?" as we were driving back to our hotel at the end of the first day - and I about bit her head off. I can imagine the amount of concentration it must take to drive in the built up roads, on the left hand side.
