Into the Thick of It

Our third car trip was into Cape Town itself. We felt we were ready. By the way, I think I forgot to mention that in addition to driving on the left and having the steering wheel on the right, Ole Blue is a stick shift which means you shift with your left hand - and it has five forward gears. We made a couple of serious mistakes on the way in because I forgot that in order to turn right from one freeway to another you need to first cross the intended freeway and turn left in a wide half circle. So as we neared town I told Bill to turn left and we were then headed on the freeway away from Cape Town. Another left and some serious discussions and we made it back on the right (correct) road in the correct direction. We parked at the Victoria and Albert Waterfront which is full of wonderful shopping and eating and other fun activities and took a tour bus all around the city. We also took the aerial cable car to the top of Table Mountain. I'll include a photo of Table Mountain taken from our town, Bloubergstrand, which has absolutely the best mountain views of anywhere. In the photo you will see three round tower things at the base of the mountain. The locals call these salt, pepper and mustard. There are zoning laws against building too far up but the developer got around them by beginning below the zone and then building taller than he was supposed to. The towers are not liked by anyone except perhaps those who live there.
